The Write Notes – August 2019

Dear Students and Families,

Musicians play.  We play our instruments, we play solo, we play together.  We play recitals and concerts.  Sounds fun and it must be nice to just “play” all the time, right?

“Well, I’m not so sure “play” is actually the best word for what we do.

As they say, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”.

We do want to be playful, explore and have fun in music and with our instruments and voices.

Anyone that’s achieved any level of mastery with a musical instrument can tell you that it takes commitment and discipline, that practicing is not always “super fun” and that there is actually a TON of work involved.

We are developing our abilities, skills, awareness and sensitivities through very focused actions to achieve our musical goals.  If we do it correctly, the end result should look like “play” to our audiences and feel more like “play” to us.

I know for myself, after many years of dedication and work, highs, lows, obstacles and plateaus, I’m having more and more fun “playing” with each passing year.  A blast, actually!

Music (performing and teaching) has truly been a labor of love for me.   It’s important and it’s worth it.

Thanks for supporting the musicians in your life, for sharing them here and for trusting our own dedicated and hardworking SJAA instructors and coaches with your loved ones.

Happy Labor Day!

Here for whatever you need.

Dear Students and Families,

Summer is here! Hope everyone is off to a great one and making the most of it.

Our family took our first ever visit to the Wisconsin Dells region right after Memorial Day. Lots of geographic and scenic beauty and more waterparks per square mile than anywhere in the world. Our favorite was the “Hurricane” at the Glacial Hills Resort. We also did our very first ZipLine! I’m not really good with heights but I didn’t cry (that much), definitely out of my comfort zone but proud to be able to keep up with the kids. Granny even did it!

We hope it will be a great summer for your whole family.

Here for whatever you need. Best to each!

The Write Notes – May 2019

The Write Notes
The Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy

Dear Students and Families,

I’m sure the countdown to the end of the school year began a while ago.  We are really getting down to it now.
Wishing everyone the best in the last days of the 2018/2019 school year!

Hope it has been a really great one.  Who’s ready for summer!?

Summer is a special time at the Academy.
Lots of our students choose to take longer lessons (or try a new instrument), we get our summer vacationers coming in who are staying with family here, summer time festival performances and more.

Quite frankly, we work a little harder in summer (and we play hard too).

We hope it will be a great season for your whole family.

Mother’s Day – To all of our amazing moms, hope it was a great spring day for you and your family.  Thank you for all you do for us and for the musicians you love.

Summer Vacation is fast approaching! –
We know (and expect) that everyone will have a great summer.  We stay on schedule at the SJAA through the summer.  Let us know when you will be out on vacations and we’ll work with you the best we can for reschedules or make-ups.  Talk to your teacher about the possibility of taking a longer lesson during the summer or maybe trying a new instrument.  We have a few fun summer time festivals ahead of us too!  Welcome to our out of town students (back in St. Joe to stay with Grandparents for the summer) who will be joining us for “vacation” music lessons.  The SJAA is a real, summertime destination!  Thanks for referring your friends and family looking for fun and constructive summer time activities.  Spaces are limited.
New Violin Openings –

After some serious begging with our excellent strings team, we are opening a few new violin times starting in June.  The violin is one of our specialties at the SJAA with master coaches trained in Suzuki methods, classical and fiddle repertoire.

Early Childhood –

We’ve recently added some very important early childhood music specialists to our team here.  Private music courses for parents with babies, toddlers and Pre-K are available nearly every morning and on Saturdays.  The benefits of music on the developing child are exponential and early exposure is simply one of the greatest gifts you can give these littlest ones.

Special Events –

Stay tuned for some new, fun, informative and engaging extensions of our programs.  Clinics and Masterclasses on specific topics, interests and instruments are coming soon.

Coloring Contest –
Rain, Rain Go Away!  Looking for a rainy day (or inside) activity in the first days out of school?  Show us your coloring skills!  You don’t have to stay in the lines either.  This coloring page with plenty of details is not for the faint of heart.  For students and their grown-ups too.  Our teaching team will choose one of our favorites and the artist will receive a $25 gift card.  Contest runs from May 22-June 22.  Download the page here…music accomplished SJAA color page or pick up a copy at your lesson.  Sharpen those crayons and colored pencils and show us what you can do!
Welcome to our NEW Students and families!!

Shannon, Owen, Lucy, Jace, Mary, Maddox, Elsa, Phoebe, Anna, Scott, Basil and Matt.

Thank you for the extra efforts to make the trip and make the time for music lessons on these cold and snowy days. You can’t stop the music!

Here’s a little news about the Academy and some things we are looking forward to.

Student of the Month
Our March “Student of the Month” is…

Alex P.!!!

Alex recently participated in the Monster Concert on guitar but he’s also a serious student and competitive swimmer.

Besides being an advancing guitarist, Alex set his personal best and fastest times this swimming season. He also took 2nd place in the city wide Math competition for his age group.

We’ll help him celebrate with an iTunes gift card!

Way to go, Alex! Congratulations on your hard work and accomplishments.

To be considered for Student of the Month, be sure to talk to your teacher about all your musical and extracurricular activities, share pictures and refer your fellow musicians to the academy.

RETAIL – Are you ready for your next book? We now offer very limited retail including some accessories and books. Let us know if you need strings, tuners, cables or if you are in search of a musical gift.

TEACHERZONE – Is our online platform. If you receive notifications from them, it’s not spam, it’s from us. Let us know if you have any trouble using it or logging in.

PAYMENTS/POLICIES – Payments are due at the first lesson of each month to secure your time slots for that month. 48 hours notice is required for credited missed lessons. Thank you!

IS YOUR TEACHER FULL? – We have very limited spaces for guitar and violin right now. We are working hard to acquire more space and interviewing for the best new teachers for our team. Besides instrumental and voice lessons, we will be offering early childhood and group classes as things come together.

Thank you for reading “The Write Notes” – Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy!

It’s going to be a great month.

Please encourage the advancing musicians in your life and in our community. We are making the world a better place through music.

Here’s to our music success!

Lesson Policy

St. Joseph Arts Academy

2022

This studio strives to provide high quality musical instruction for students and reliable employment for instructors. It has been our experience that competence and mastery of a musical instrument demands a definite, not casual, commitment of time and energy. Therefore, a regular lesson/class time is arranged for each student. Students can plan their practice schedule around their lesson time and establish effective routines for making progress. For these reasons the following policies have been adopted and updated:

Tuition Private lessons are $102 per month. All payment is due at the FIRST LESSON of each month.

Enrollment – Paying tuition for a month’s lessons reserves a lesson appointment which can be renewed each month with payment.

Schedules –Lessons are generally scheduled for a specific time once per week with four lessons per month. Months containing a 5th week will be used for make-ups or otherwise considered a “Bonus” lesson! Each instructor maintains a unique schedule with a limited number of lesson appointments each week.

Cancellations – 48 hours notice.
Instructors make their livelihood by providing their time and services to students able to dedicate their time and sincere desire to learn a musical instrument.

Though all communication is appreciated, non-emergency cancellations, last minute cancellations and “no shows” necessitate charging the full lesson fee for the unused space reserved for the student. 48 hours notice.
In most cases, missed lessons will be made up in the 5th week. It is sometimes necessary that  the instructor will need to reschedule at the availability of both student and teacher or cancel.

Should the instructor need to cancel, credit for the pre-paid lesson payment will be applied to the following month.

The 365 Day Practice Challenge

The 365 Day Practice Challenge
The Goal here is to make your practice a part of your everyday routine. You will only need to practice the days you sleep or the days you eat! The amount of time is not as important as the act of just being with your instrument for a little while everyday. (Those who dedicate themselves to 20 minutes per day will have over 121 hours of practice invested.) You’ll be a confident and advancing musician!
