Back to School Music Lessons at St. Joseph Arts Academy

Get Back on Track, Back to Routines, and Into Music!

As the new school year begins, families are busy getting back into routines—new schedules, homework, sports practices, and extracurricular activities. This season is also the perfect time to set your child up with back to school music lessons at the St. Joseph Arts Academy.

Music lessons are more than just an “activity.” They provide structure, confidence, and creativity while offering a positive outlet that kids can carry with them for a lifetime. Whether your child is a budding musician or simply looking for something meaningful outside of sports, private lessons at our academy are one of the best ways to help them thrive.

Why Private Music Lessons Are the Smart Choice This Fall

At the St. Joseph Arts Academy, we specialize in one-on-one, personalized instruction. Unlike large group classes or school band programs, private lessons allow each student to progress at their own pace with the guidance of a dedicated teacher.

Benefits include:

  • 🎶 Customized learning for every student’s level and goals.

  • Consistent weekly routine that supports focus and discipline.

  • 🌟 Confidence-building performances and opportunities to shine.

  • 🎹 A wide range of instruments to choose from: piano, guitar, drums, violin, voice, cello, and more.

Whether your child dreams of becoming a professional musician or simply wants a positive, creative outlet, private music lessons give them the attention and support they deserve.

A Positive Alternative to Sports

Not every child connects with athletics, and that’s okay! Music offers many of the same benefits—teamwork, discipline, achievement—without the pressure of competition. For families seeking a fun, engaging, and educational activity, music lessons are an excellent option.

Our academy has become a hub for families who want their children to:

  • Build confidence and self-expression.

  • Develop a lifelong skill they’ll always cherish.

  • Be part of a supportive and inspiring community.

Dear SJAA Families,

It’s that time again—backpacks are filling up, calendars are getting marked, and routines are slowly finding their way back into our days. We hope you’ve all had a wonderful and restorative summer, filled with family fun, adventures, and hopefully a little music too!

Here at the Academy, we’ve had a truly fantastic summer. From our 30-Day Practice Challenge, performances at HawkfestAKMA, and our Second Saturdays at the Children’s Discovery Center, to the joyful sounds of our Early Childhood Music Classes, the building has been alive with music and momentum. We’re proud of our students who stayed committed and creative all summer long—it’s been a season of real growth!

As we step into the new school year, it’s a perfect time to reestablish musical routines. Here are a few quick tips to help make music a seamless part of your family’s schedule this fall:

Choose a consistent weekly lesson time and make it sacred. Lesson times are filling up quickly, so please reach out if you haven’t secured yours yet.

Build practice into the daily routine—even 10–15 focused minutes can make a world of difference. Tie it to another habit (right after school, before dinner, or just before screen time) to make it stick.

Create a dedicated space for music at home: a well-lit, quiet corner with the instrument ready and accessible can be very inviting for regular practice.

Set small goals and celebrate often. Whether it’s mastering a song, remembering to bring a practice notebook, or simply showing up with a smile—acknowledge the progress!

We’re excited to continue offering more opportunities for our students to shine this year, including monthly recitalsMall Concerts, and our return to “Bluegrass Battles Hunger” in September.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your musical journey. We’re honored to work alongside your families as we grow together through music. Let’s make this school year one to remember!

Our August  “Student of the Month” is…

Avery A.!

We are so lucky to have Avery and her family with us at the SJAA.

Avery has always loved music! So far, she plays violin, cello, and viola, and her next goals are to learn bass guitar, and voice. This fall, she’s starting 10th grade and will be playing both violin and cello in the Symphonic Orchestra at Central.

Avery has also been a dedicated figure skater with the St. Joseph Figure Skating Club for the past nine years. She competes individually and is heading into her sixth season with the Griffon Gliders synchronized figure skating team.

On top of that, Avery joined the swim team at Central this past year and plans to stay on—it’s no surprise she loves to swim!

Avery is also passionate about art. She’s won several awards, including three wins in the Purina Art Contest, her most recent being this year. Her other interests include going to the gym, solving Sudoku puzzles, fishing, spending time with her pets (two dogs and a cat), hanging out with friends, and—yes—even math!

She loves taking lessons with Mrs. Gerhardt at the St. Joseph Arts Academy, and she’s excited to see what the future holds!

We’ll celebrate Avery with a Ricky Deans gift card for her!

Thank you, Avery for referring your friends and family to the Academy.

Congratulations!!!

To be considered for Student of the Month, be sure to talk to your teacher about all your musical and extracurricular activities, share pictures and refer your fellow musicians to the academy.

Our August Pets of the Month goes to

Tele & Cowboy!
Thank you to the Branson family for sharing a photo of your sweet fur babies.  Each month, SJAA will select a pet to feature and a donation will be made to Friends of the St. Joseph Animal Shelter in honor of all of our local pets in need. Share a favorite pic of your favorite pet and maybe they’ll be named the SJAA “Pet of the Month”!  Bring on those adorable snapshots!

SJAA Partners with InspireU for “Second Saturdays” Music Experience!

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership between the St. Joseph Arts Academy and InspireU, St. Joseph’s brand-new children’s discovery center! As part of this exciting collaboration, SJAA students and faculty will become MusicMakers during SJAA Second Saturdays from 1:00–4:00 PM at InspireU.

This unique, interactive experience will allow our musicians to rehearse, workshop, and demonstrate the creative process of making music in a fun and informal way. While InspireU patrons (ages infant to 10 years) roam, play, and explore, they’ll have the chance to observe music in action—seeing firsthand how musicians practice, prepare, and bring songs to life.

Research shows that young people who witness art and music being created are more likely to be inspired to try it themselves. Through this partnership, SJAA is furthering its mission to ignite a love for music in the next generation. We believe this is an incredible opportunity for everyone involved, and we can’t wait to share the joy of music with the InspireU community!

Why Kids Quit Music Lessons (and What We Can Do About It)

Why Kids Quit Music Lessons (and What We Can Do About It)

By Jason Riley, Director – St. Joseph Arts Academy

We believe few things in life are more joyful than making music. So why do so many young students give up on it?

At the Academy, we see firsthand how powerful music can be in a young person’s life. But we also recognize a hard truth: many students abandon music altogether after just a few years—or even months—of lessons. And it’s not because they don’t like music. It’s often because they don’t like how it’s taught.

In fact, most kids love music… just not “music lessons.”

Play vs. Practice

Let’s face it: what do athletes do? They play sports. What do actors do? They play roles. What do musicians do? We play music. Play is joyful, natural, and self-motivated. But somewhere along the way, music lessons can lose that sense of play. They become another chore, another item on a busy to-do list.

If we want kids to stick with music—and more importantly, to love it—we need to make sure the play is front and center. Yes, skills matter. Structure matters. But if joy disappears from the process, motivation soon follows.

Why They Quit: Common Patterns We See

Over the years, we’ve seen several factors that can lead kids to step away from music—and they’re usually not what parents expect.

1. The Language We Use Matters

When we call it a “lesson,” it sounds like school. When we say “practice,” it sounds like homework. We don’t want to play word games, but we do want to rethink the message we’re sending. At SJAA, we’re starting to talk more about “playing time” instead of “practice time.” It’s a small shift, but it matters.

2. Over-scheduling and Burnout

Music becomes just one more scheduled activity in a packed week. With limited energy, many students disengage—not because they don’t enjoy music, but because they’re overwhelmed. When playing music feels like pressure instead of passion, the love fades.

3. Parental Pressure (even the well-meaning kind)

Parents want the best for their children—but sometimes the best intentions backfire. Encouragement can sound like judgment. Helping can feel like hovering. At SJAA, we encourage parents to support from the sidelines—ask questions, listen to their kids play, and celebrate progress (even when it’s small).

4. Perfection Culture

Auditions, recitals, and competitions can be exciting and motivating—but they can also introduce a heavy sense of comparison and fear. When perfection becomes the goal, students become afraid to make mistakes—and that’s when creativity dies.

5. Focusing Only on Achievement

We’ve all seen the articles: “Music makes you better at math,” “Piano boosts IQ.” While it’s true that music enhances many academic and life skills, those benefits are secondary. When we treat music like a résumé booster, we risk stripping it of its soul. The real benefit of music is music itself.

6. A Narrow View of What Music Is

We love the classical tradition. We teach it and celebrate it. But music is bigger than the works of long-dead geniuses. Our students also love pop, rock, jazz, movie soundtracks, video game themes, and writing their own songs. When students see music as a living, breathing artform—not just a history lesson—they stay engaged.

A Personal Note

A personal note from me: I didn’t stop playing or taking lessons after childhood—in fact, my journey with guitar began with some hesitation. My parents were a bit reluctant to invest in an instrument at first, worried I wouldn’t practice enough or that it might be a waste. And honestly, in those earliest years, I wasn’t the best practicer. It took me a while to really become obsessed with playing, and even longer to figure out how to practice effectively.

There was a stretch of a couple years without a teacher, but I found my way with encouragement from friends and even teachers outside of music. Over time, I experienced multiple exciting growth spurts, as well as periods where progress plateaued and felt stagnant. I burned out, then reignited my passion again and again—sometimes through new teachers, sometimes by exploring new styles, or chasing fresh opportunities.

This ebb and flow, the ups and downs, have been a big part of my musical life. And it’s exactly the kind of lifelong, evolving relationship with music that I want for every student here at the Academy.  It really is a fun journey.  Music is never done with you.

So What Can We Do?

We’ll talk more soon about how we’re actively shifting our approach at SJAA to reflect these ideas. We want to inspire teachers to nurture joyful musicianship, empower families to be supportive partners, and help students find their own voice through music.

Because when music is meaningful, it lasts a lifetime.

Stay tuned for part two—“How We Keep Music Fun (and Students Playing!)”

Summer Music and So Much More!

Hey SJAA Family,

There’s just so much going on here lately — it’s an exciting time to be part of the Academy!

We’ve had a great start to summer with happy, smiling students filling the building, our new Early Childhood Music Classes kicking off, a super fun St. Joseph Kids Make Music Day (thanks to everyone who came out!), and a beautiful performance over at AKMA. We’ve got even more coming up, including SJAA at Hawkfest Blues and Jazz Festival on June 14, our monthly 2nd Saturdays at InspireU, and our 2025 Graduates getting recognized. We’re even booking the event space for birthday and grad parties, so let us know if you need a spot! Big thanks to everyone who helped out with our new SJAA commercial too — it looks amazing, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

In the middle of all this excitement, we know summer can get busy and routines can shift — but we also know how powerful just a little regular practice can be. Even short daily sessions add up fast and help students keep their momentum going strong.

Parents, your encouragement matters more than you know. Just a gentle reminder, a quiet space to practice, or asking to hear a new song makes a big impact. And right now is a perfect time to join the fun by hopping into our SJAA June 30-Day Practice Challenge — track those minutes, build the habit, and maybe even win some prizes!

Thanks again for being part of the magic here at SJAA. We’re grateful for all you do, and we’re proud of our students for keeping the music going — all year long.

See you soon,

Pick-Up Notes – July Newsletter

Dear SJAA Families,

Summer is moving fast — and what a great one it’s been so far!

We just wrapped up our June 30-Day Practice Challenge, and we couldn’t be prouder of the students who took it on with such focus and determination. Whether they were practicing at home, performing in public, or just picking up their instrument a little more often, we saw real commitment — and it shows.

Speaking of performances, our students have been out sharing their music with the community in wonderful ways this summer. From the AKMA Art Fair and Hawkfest – Coleman Hawkins Blues and Jazz Festival to SJAA Second Saturdays at the Discovery Center’s InspireU series, these young musicians have truly represented the academy with talent, heart, and professionalism. Bravo to all who participated and to the families who helped make it happen!

As we enjoy these summer days, it’s also a great time to begin thinking ahead to fall. Back-to-school is just around the corner, and we’re already working with many families to secure their preferred lesson times for the new academic year. Fall tends to be one of our busiest seasons, and we want to make sure you have the schedule that works best for your student and your family. If you’d like to keep your current time or are thinking about shifting days or adding a second instrument, please let us know soon — we’re here to help.

Thank you for making music a priority this summer. We’re honored to support your students and walk with them on their musical journeys. Your encouragement at home and your dedication to their growth make all the difference.

Let’s keep making the most of this season — and get ready to start the school year strong!

Stay Cool and Thank you!

Thanks to our SJAA faculty, students and friends at Eagle Radio for helping us put together this great spot about the academy! Keep an eye out for us. Big THANK YOU to all who share the SJAA as valued members, team and with your families and friends!

Congrats to Mr. Sam,

Why Early Childhood Music Matters — And How to Get Started at SJAA This Fall

🎵 Why Early Childhood Music Matters — And How to Get Started at SJAA This Fall

At the St. Joseph Arts Academy, we believe that music is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our children—especially in their earliest years. That’s why our Early Childhood Music Program is designed to support families and their littlest learners with joyful, developmentally appropriate classes that build brains, strengthen bonds, and spark a lifelong love of music.

Whether your child is just learning to walk or getting ready for kindergarten, there’s a class for every stage of early growth and musical discovery.

🎶 Why Music in the Early Years?

The first five years of life are critical for brain development, and music activates more areas of the brain than almost any other activity. Singing, moving, clapping, dancing, and playing simple instruments help young children develop:

  • Language and listening skills

  • Motor coordination and balance

  • Memory and cognitive development

  • Emotional expression and confidence

  • Social interaction and routine

Music is more than just fun—it’s a whole-brain workout that gives kids a strong foundation for future learning, creativity, and success in school and life.

🎹 Meet Our New Director of Early Childhood Music

We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Jolie Riley as our new Director of Early Childhood Music at SJAA!

Mrs. Riley is a passionate, experienced music educator with over 30 years of teaching in both public and Catholic schools. A dedicated mother of two and lovingly known by her littlest students as “Smiley Riley,” she brings warmth, joy, and a deep understanding of early childhood learning to every class. Her nurturing style and enthusiasm for music make her classes a true highlight of the week for children and parents alike.

🍂 Fall 2025 Early Childhood Music Schedule

Our next session of early childhood music classes begins the week of September 6 (Saturdays) and September 8 (Mondays). Space is limited, so we encourage early registration to secure your preferred time.

Class Offerings:

👶 Baby Bebop: Music Beginnings (Ages 12–24 months)

  • Saturdays at 9:00am or 1:00pm

  • Mondays at 9:00am or 4:00pm

👧 Tune Tykes: Music Discovery (Ages 2–3 years)

  • Saturdays at 10:00am or 2:00pm

  • Mondays at 10:00am or 5:00pm

🧒 Melody Makers: Music Explorers (Ages 4–5 years)

  • Saturdays at 11:00am or 3:00pm

  • Mondays at 11:00am or 6:00pm

These classes are intentionally small and personalized, allowing every child and parent to fully engage and enjoy the experience. Families tell us it’s the best part of their week!

🎵 Join the Musical Journey

If you’re looking for something fun, educational, and truly enriching for your young child, we invite you to join the SJAA Early Childhood Music Program. Give your child the gift of music—and give yourself the joy of watching them thrive.

Dear SJAA Families,

We have so much to celebrate this month at the Academy!

Thanks to your support, our Spring Clean-Up and Parking Lot Sale was a huge success. The Academy is looking fresh with new paint inside and out, and it’s never looked better! We’re proud to provide a clean, welcoming space for our students, families, and faculty—your support truly helps us keep our creative home in top shape.

Another big milestone this month was the very first “St. Joseph Kids Make Music Day!” It was a fantastic event full of fun, friends, music, and community spirit. Families toured the Academy, met our awesome staff, and even joined in some music-making of their own. A big thank you to everyone who came out to share the SJAA with a friend or just to BE A FRIEND!

As we head into the summer months, we want to remind you that the SJAA is a year-round school. While vacations and summer fun are important, we also know this can be a perfect season for students to make real progress on their musical journey. Many students have more time to practicetry a new instrumentexplore new styles, or dive deeper into their current studies. Summer can be a time of incredible growth—and we’re here to help make that happen.

We don’t slow down in the summer—in fact, we grow! Our students are preparing to perform at amazing community events like the Museum Art Fair and Hawkfest, and there’s even more music-making happening every week.

Plus, we know schedules can get hectic in the summer. That’s why we offer flexible options to help your family stay on track:
5th week bonus lessons
Alternate scheduling
Virtual lessons when you travel
Popular video lessons for busy weeks
Group make-ups, guest instructors & specialty clinics

Can’t make it one week? You can even send a friend or family member in your place—or donate your lesson time to a student in need through our partnerships with the YWCA and Noyes Home.

If your student loves their teacher or has a prime lesson time (like 4pm on Monday), it’s especially important to keep that spot. Lesson times are in high demand, and we want to make sure your child continues with the teacher and schedule that works best for them.

We’re here to work with you, to accommodate your plans, and to add value to your musical experience all year long. Summer is no reason to hit pause—it’s a time to thrive.

Let’s make it a summer of music, growth, and fun!

I absolutely adore going to the St. Joseph Arts Academy. I take lessons with Brent Isom, who, in my opinion, couldn’t be better at helping me learn the guitar. While I have my own limitations, Brent’s enthusiastic approach to teaching has deepened both my love for music and my abilities. Honestly, every lesson brightens my week. How Much Should I Practice?

There’s no single right answer. It depends on your goals, your schedule, and your stage of life.

But here’s a truth from world-renowned educator Shinichi Suzuki:
“Only practice on the days you eat.”
In other words, consistency matters more than quantity.

Even 10 minutes a day makes a difference.
You don’t need hours. But you do need to show up daily, even if it’s just to hold your instrument, strum a few chords, or sing one song.

“Just play what you can TODAY, the best you can with the time you have NOW.”

Let your instrument be part of your life—like brushing your teeth or walking the dog. Make music a habit, not a chore.

Parent Tips: Gentle Encouragement Works Best

Parents, you’re the “practice partners,” not the enforcers.

✅ Be patient. Learning an instrument is like raising a child. Growth takes time.
✅ Avoid arguments. Instead, ask “What will you play for me today?” or “Can I hear your favorite part?”
✅ Keep it light. Five good minutes of joyful music is better than 30 minutes of stress.
✅ Celebrate small wins. A new note, a clear tone, or a steady rhythm is reason to cheer!

🔁 Ritual helps. Attach music time to another daily habit:

  • “Before dinner, we practice.”

  • “Right after brushing teeth, it’s guitar time!”

🎯 Create a simple, predictable routine and stick with it gently.

7 Smart Practice Strategies for Students of All Ages

  1. 🎯 Set tiny goals: “Play this phrase 3 times with no mistakes.”

  2. Use a timer: 10, 15, or 20 minutes of focused work > hours of distracted time.

  3. 🎶 Warm up: Scales, easy songs, or improvising gets the brain and fingers ready.

  4. 🧠 Focus on one thing: Rhythm, dynamics, posture, or tone—but not all at once.

  5. 📒 Use a practice log: Track your time and what you worked on.

  6. 💡 Mix it up: Play by ear, read music, memorize, or jam with backing tracks.

  7. 🎉 Reward yourself: After practicing, watch a fun video, eat a snack, or do something you love.

Bonus: Realistic Time Goals (Ages 6–Adult)

Age/Level Daily Practice Goal Notes
Young Beginners (6–8) 5–10 min Make it playful and short
Elementary (9–12) 10–20 min Help create a habit
Teens 20–30 min Build discipline and joy
Adults 20–60 min Stay inspired with variety
Aspiring Pros 1–3 hours+ Divide into focused sessions

🎸 Just Keep Going

You don’t need to practice forever. You just need to practice today.

“Be a master today. Enjoy your music today. You don’t have to wait 55 years.”

💙 From all of us at the St. Joseph Arts Academy—thank you for making music part of your family’s life.

Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Music Lessons at SJAA

Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Music Lessons at SJAA

At the St. Joseph Arts Academy, spring has brought exciting changes—and even more reasons to make music with us!

We’ve given the Academy a fresh new look with new paint inside and out, plus a major spring clean-up and successful parking lot sale. Our space is now more organized, welcoming, and inspiring than ever for our students, families, and faculty.

One of the biggest highlights of the season was the launch of our very first “St. Joseph Kids Make Music Day!” This special event welcomed families from across the community to tour the Academy, meet our staff, and enjoy fun music activities. It was an incredible reminder of how music brings people together and how excited local kids are to learn and play!

Year-Round Music Education for Kids and Adults

As we head into the warmer months, we want to remind families that the St. Joseph Arts Academy is a year-round music school. Many parents assume that music lessons pause during summer, but that’s not the case here.

In fact, summer is one of the best times to take music lessons!

With fewer school obligations and more flexible schedules, students often make faster progress. It’s the perfect time to:

  • Explore a new instrument

  • Try a different musical style

  • Spend more time practicing and composing

  • Double up lessons or focus on a special music project

We also offer exciting performance opportunities throughout the summer, including appearances at the St. Joseph Museum Art Fair and the Hawkfest Jazz & Blues Festival.

Flexible Options for Busy Summer Schedules

We understand that families travel and have shifting schedules in the summer. That’s why we offer flexible lesson options to help students stay consistent:

  • Virtual lessons (great for vacations!)

  • Video lessons (super popular and easy to use)

  • Alternate lesson times & 5th-week makeups

  • Guest instructors & group makeup classes

  • Specialty clinics to explore new skills or techniques

You can even send a friend or sibling in your student’s place—or donate the lesson time to a student in need through our partnerships with the YWCA and Noyes Home.

Keep Your Spot—And Your Favorite Teacher!

If your child has a favorite teacher or a high-demand lesson time (like a 4:00pm Monday slot), it’s important to stay enrolled through the summer. Our teachers’ schedules fill quickly, and we want to make sure your family has the best experience possible.

Music Is a Powerful and Positive Summer Activity

With school out, many kids end up spending too much time on screens or sleeping the day away. Music gives them a positive, productive, and creative outlet—a chance to stay sharp, express themselves, and build confidence while still having fun.

We’re here to make summer music lessons easy, flexible, and fun for the whole family.

Ready to keep the music going? Contact us today to customize your summer music plan at the St. Joseph Arts Academy—where kids (and adults!) grow, create, and thrive all year long.
