The Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy
Dear Students & SJAA Families,Letter from the Director – Spring Into Music This March!

Dear SJAA Families,

Spring is in the air, bringing longer days, fresh energy, and a renewed sense of creativity! March is a wonderful time to refocus, set new musical goals, and enjoy the joy that music brings to our lives. Whether you’re preparing for upcoming recitals and contests, making the most of spring break, or simply enjoying the process of learning, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Spring Break & Music: Make the Most of Your Time Off

For many families, March means Spring Break—a much-needed pause from the usual routine. While it’s a great time to relax and recharge, it can also be the perfect opportunity to get creative and stay musically engaged! Here are a few ideas to keep music alive during your break:

Take Music Outdoors – If the weather is nice, take your instrument outside and enjoy a change of scenery! Play in a park, on the patio, or even for friends and family at a backyard get-together.

Record Your Own Music Video – Have fun recording yourself playing a favorite piece, then share it with friends, family, your teacher and the SJAA!. It’s a great way to document your progress and celebrate your hard work!

Try Something New – Experiment with a new song, improvisation, or a different instrument. If you play piano, try writing a short tune. Guitarists—see what you can create with a simple blues progression! Drummers, explore different rhythms and styles!

Practice with a Purpose – If you’re preparing for an upcoming recital, contest, or festival, use the break to fine-tune your performance. Set small, daily goals so you stay fresh without feeling overwhelmed.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Musical Moments on the Horizon!

As we move into spring, there are so many exciting things to look forward to:

District & State Music Contests, SJAMTA Evaluative Auditions & Summer Music Festivals are ahead! For students preparing for competitions, now is the time to polish those pieces and gain confidence in your playing!

New Lesson Goals – Spring is a great time to set fresh musical goals. What’s something you’d love to accomplish before summer? A new song? A performance challenge? Let’s make it happen together!

March is a time of renewal and growth, and music is the perfect way to channel that energy into something inspiring. Stay engaged, keep playing, and most importantly—HAVE FUN!

Thank you for being a valued member and part of the academy family!

Happy Spring!!

Letter from the Director – Back to School Music lessons

Ring the Bell.  School is in Session!!

Letter from the Director

Dear SJAA Families,

As we kick off a new school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the exciting opportunities that lie ahead and share some thoughts on how music can enrich our lives during this busy season.

Back-to-school time is often filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. It’s a time of fresh starts and new routines, and it’s the perfect moment to integrate music into your child’s life. At the SJAA, we believe that music education is not just an extracurricular activity—it’s a powerful tool for growth and development. Engaging in music lessons has been shown to enhance cognitive abilities, improve focus, and boost self-confidence. As students transition back to school, music can offer a creative outlet and a sense of accomplishment that complements their academic pursuits.

To make the most of this time of year, consider establishing a structured routine that includes music practice. Consistent practice can help students develop discipline and time management skills, which are beneficial both in and out of the classroom. Setting aside a specific time each day for music lessons and practice can help create a balanced schedule that accommodates both schoolwork and artistic growth. Encourage your child to set small, achievable goals and celebrate their progress along the way. This positive reinforcement can make their musical journey enjoyable and rewarding.

For those of you who have been contemplating starting a new instrument or exploring vocal training, now is a fantastic time to jump in. Music is a wonderful way to channel energy and enthusiasm, and our caring instructors are eager to help students discover their passion. We still have a few limited spots available, so if you have friends or family interested in joining our vibrant community, encourage them to reach out. It’s a great opportunity to get matched with a favorite teacher and become part of the largest private music school in NW Missouri.

Juggling back-to-school activities can be a challenge for any parent. To help manage the busy schedule, consider integrating music lessons as a rewarding and enriching part of your family’s routine. It can be a source of joy and relaxation amidst the hustle and bustle. And remember, the skills and discipline gained through music can positively impact other areas of life, providing a well-rounded educational experience.

We are on your team so don’t hesitate to reach out for productive strategies and resources to get the most out of your music lessons, practice time and general sanity!  We are here to help.

As we ramp up this school year, we wish you and your family a successful and fulfilling journey ahead. May it be filled with growth, learning, and, of course, the joy of making music.

Thank you for sharing your family with ours.

Here’s to a best year yet!

Pick Up Notes – January 2023

Pick-Up Notes
The Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy
View this email in your browser
Dear Students & SJAA Families,As we welcome a the new year at St. Joseph Arts Academy, we are jumping with excitement and anticipation for the musical journey that lies ahead. The start of a new year is not just a change in the calendar; it’s an opportunity for growth, advancement, and the pursuit of new musical heights.

This year, all are encouraged to set fresh goals for our musical endeavors. Whether you’re just starting out or an already advancing musician, the new year brings with it a chance to dedicate yourself to your craft with renewed vigor and commitment.

Now, with the winter season upon us, we may find ourselves facing unexpected school cancellations due to cold and snowy, Missouri winter days. Instead of seeing these cancellations as disruptions, let’s view them as opportunities to enhance our musical skills. Here are five ways you can make the most of your extra time off:

  • Compose a Winter-inspired Piece:
  • Take advantage of the cozy indoors and use this time to compose a piece of music inspired by the winter season. Whether it’s a calming melody or an upbeat tune, let the snowflakes outside influence your creativity.
  • Master a Challenging Piece:
  • Dive into that challenging piece you’ve been eyeing but haven’t had enough time to conquer. Use the extra hours to practice and refine your skills, overcoming musical hurdles with determination.
  • Virtual Jam Sessions:
  • Connect with your fellow musicians online for virtual jam sessions. Collaborate on new arrangements, share musical ideas, and stay connected with the joy of making music together, even when you can’t be in the same physical space.
  • Explore Music Theory:
  • Delve into the theoretical aspects of music during your snow day. Whether it’s studying new scales, understanding complex chords, or exploring the history of music, broaden your musical knowledge base.
  • Record and Reflect:
  • Set up a recording session at home and document your musical progress. Listen to your recordings, identify areas for improvement, and use this reflective process to refine your skills further.
  • BONUS IDEA
  • Just listen to music.  New music.  Old Music.  Make a game of taking turns sharing favorite or new music with your family and friends.  Get our the old records and tapes, use Alexa or YouTube and explore new (or old) composers, artists, bands, styles, one-hit-wonders, anything you can think of!!  It’s fun and you’ll find some new (and old) favorites.

Let’s make this new year at St. Joseph Arts Academy a time of not just musical learning, but also a period of creative exploration and super-fun collaboration. Embrace the opportunities that come with the winter season, and let the beauty of music warm you up.

Wishing you all a safe, WARM and inspiring new year!
Let’s Make Some Great Music This Winter!

Pick-Up Notes – Fall Newsletter 2023

Pick-Up Notes
The Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy
View this email in your browser
Dear Students & SJAA Families,Recently, we were honored to be a part of a fall presentation on the arts in our community to the Joseph Company in coordination with “Imagine 2040”.  The presentation brought nearly every local arts organization together to discuss and strategize about the future of the arts in St. Joseph.  Together, we created a powerful message that went directly to the heart of our local community leaders.

These leaders recognized the importance of OUR academy in fostering a vibrant arts community in St. Joseph. At the heart of the SJAA mission is the belief that the arts are not just a form of entertainment but a powerful means of connecting people and enriching lives. As we work in harmony with local organizations like the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art, St. Joseph Museums, Second Harvest Food Bank, RRT, Creative Arts Productions and our public and private schools, we strengthen the cultural fabric of our city, providing a platform for families to engage in the arts.

Our academy is THE place where creativity knows no bounds, and our students are the driving force behind this cultural renaissance. By collaborating with organizations such as the St. Joseph Symphony, Downtown Association and 3D Arts Pod, we amplify the impact of the arts in our community. It is through these collective efforts that we create an environment where the arts flourish, offering families an opportunity to embrace the beauty of expression and innovation.

We encourage all of our families to become an integral part of this thriving arts community. Together with organizations like the Allied Arts Council and the Community Chorus, we aim to inspire, educate, and entertain, forging lasting connections that enhance the quality of life for every St. Joseph resident. Thank you for your continued support, and let us look forward to a future where the arts are at the heart of our community.

It was our challenge to the Joseph Company leaders to be a “Champion for 8”.  And we put that challenge to each of us.  It’s simple and fun!  Make a commitment to visit one museum, attend one show and/or make a retail purchase or take a class each month, October ’23 to May of ’24 for a total of 8 Months.

Look for the “Arts Menu” located around the academy for some places to start.  With your support, local arts will continue to grow along with the cultural identity of our hometown.  It’s the simple first steps to making St. Joseph a better and better place to live, work and play for all of our families!

Let’s Make Some Great Music This Fall!

Photo Day @ SJAA 2023!
Our annual student appreciation and “Photo Day @ SJAA” was a big hit last weekend.  Students got the “model” treatment with a fun photo shoot (with their instruments) with Tyler Osborn Studios from KC.  These heirloom quality photos are a snapshot in time that will be beautiful art for the SJAA walls and a treasure for our families’ homes.

Bluegrass Battles Hunger
SJAA violin and guitar students gave a special performance in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank.  “Bluegrass Battles Hunger” is an annual music festival to benefit the hungry in our region.  After a rainout and a reschedule, the bluegrass went on in the SJAA recital room to a packed house.  Thanks to all the students and families who rallied for this great cause!

Student of the Month Award
Our Student of the Month is…   Alex R.!

We are so lucky to have Alex and his family with us at the SJAA.

Alex’s hobbies include playing guitar (as a homeschooler he drives over an hour each week to study with Mr. Riley), video games, reading and working with electronics.  Aside of the work at the SJAA, he’s into Bible quizzing, community theater, leading worship and church activities and works on the family farm.

Alex (along with his guitar coach, director, Mr. Riley) will be performing in the pit for CHS Theatre’s upcoming run of the musical “Mean Girls”.

He’s also humble, kind-hearted and a hard worker.

Way to go, Alex!  We are SO proud of you!!

We’ll celebrate Alex with an Amazon gift card! Thank you, Alex for referring your friends and family to the Academy.

Congratulations!!!
To be considered for Student of the Month, be sure to talk to your teacher about all your musical and extracurricular activities, share pictures and refer your fellow musicians to the academy.

Pet of the Month Award
Our October “Pet of the Month” goes to …   the Lindsay’s dog, Sadie!  Thank you to the Lindsay family for sharing a photo of your sweet fur baby.

Each month, SJAA will select a pet to feature and a donation will be made to Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Joseph and St. Joseph Animal Shelter in honor of all of our local pets in need. Share a favorite pic of your favorite pet and maybe they’ll be named the SJAA “Pet of the Month”!  Bring on those adorable snapshots!

We’ve now reached over 40, 5-star Google reviews!  So, thank you to everybody that put in their reviews.  We so much appreciate it, but we want to get to 50 reviews.  If you haven’t yet, please consider going to Goggle, giving us a review.  We’d love your feedback and thank you so much again for helping us get over 25 5-star Google reviews.
