The Write Notes – May 2019

The Write Notes
The Newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy

Dear Students and Families,

I’m sure the countdown to the end of the school year began a while ago.  We are really getting down to it now.
Wishing everyone the best in the last days of the 2018/2019 school year!

Hope it has been a really great one.  Who’s ready for summer!?

Summer is a special time at the Academy.
Lots of our students choose to take longer lessons (or try a new instrument), we get our summer vacationers coming in who are staying with family here, summer time festival performances and more.

Quite frankly, we work a little harder in summer (and we play hard too).

We hope it will be a great season for your whole family.

Mother’s Day – To all of our amazing moms, hope it was a great spring day for you and your family.  Thank you for all you do for us and for the musicians you love.

Summer Vacation is fast approaching! –
We know (and expect) that everyone will have a great summer.  We stay on schedule at the SJAA through the summer.  Let us know when you will be out on vacations and we’ll work with you the best we can for reschedules or make-ups.  Talk to your teacher about the possibility of taking a longer lesson during the summer or maybe trying a new instrument.  We have a few fun summer time festivals ahead of us too!  Welcome to our out of town students (back in St. Joe to stay with Grandparents for the summer) who will be joining us for “vacation” music lessons.  The SJAA is a real, summertime destination!  Thanks for referring your friends and family looking for fun and constructive summer time activities.  Spaces are limited.
New Violin Openings –

After some serious begging with our excellent strings team, we are opening a few new violin times starting in June.  The violin is one of our specialties at the SJAA with master coaches trained in Suzuki methods, classical and fiddle repertoire.

Early Childhood –

We’ve recently added some very important early childhood music specialists to our team here.  Private music courses for parents with babies, toddlers and Pre-K are available nearly every morning and on Saturdays.  The benefits of music on the developing child are exponential and early exposure is simply one of the greatest gifts you can give these littlest ones.

Special Events –

Stay tuned for some new, fun, informative and engaging extensions of our programs.  Clinics and Masterclasses on specific topics, interests and instruments are coming soon.

Coloring Contest –
Rain, Rain Go Away!  Looking for a rainy day (or inside) activity in the first days out of school?  Show us your coloring skills!  You don’t have to stay in the lines either.  This coloring page with plenty of details is not for the faint of heart.  For students and their grown-ups too.  Our teaching team will choose one of our favorites and the artist will receive a $25 gift card.  Contest runs from May 22-June 22.  Download the page here…music accomplished SJAA color page or pick up a copy at your lesson.  Sharpen those crayons and colored pencils and show us what you can do!
Welcome to our NEW Students and families!!

Shannon, Owen, Lucy, Jace, Mary, Maddox, Elsa, Phoebe, Anna, Scott, Basil and Matt.

Student of the Month

Our April “Student of the Month” is…

Eh Naw Naw!!!

We are so lucky to have Eh and her family with us at the SJAA.  Besides being an excellent student, she is also a very disciplined young musician with a great attitude who is always prepared for each lesson.

We’ll celebrate Eh with an iTunes gift card for her!

Thank you, Eh for referring your friends and family to the Academy.

Congratulations!!!

To be considered for Student of the Month, be sure to talk to your teacher about all your musical and extracurricular activities, share pictures and refer your fellow musicians to the academy.

Special of the Month! Hamilton Music Stands – We have a limited number (only 10) of these fold-able, adjustable music stands.  Great for any music space and they fold-up and include a carrying bag for the upcoming tour.  A music stand is a professional necessity for every practicing musician or music room.  We offer these at a discount to SJAA members.

Just $15 (you save $10.99).

Books!
Is your student ready for new books? We carry a very limited supply of instructor approved titles. Talk with your teacher about your next books and we’ll get them ordered.

MORE News…

Welcome to our newest guitar coach, JC Dirks!  JC is an amazing musician, family man and musical director at his home church in Maryville.  He’s been a long time friend who we’ve handpicked as a perfect addition to our teaching team at the SJAA.

Pomp and Circumstance – Our own Vocal/Piano Coach, Monica recently completed her 2nd music degree!  Adding to her BA in vocal performance from Truman State, Monica received her BME in Music Education from MWSU.  Congratulations, Monica!

“The Summer of 2019”

Summer is the best time for outdoor music and music festivals.

St. Joseph has an amazing culture for live music all summer long with FREE concerts like “Parties on the Parkway”, “Sounds of Summer”, “Hawkfest”, “JoeStock” & “Imagine Eleven”.

I always look forward to this busy season at home and on the road with our steel pan, party band, Soca Jukebox!  The band is celebrating it’s 17th season this summer.  It’s awesome to be able to play fun music with fun friends.

If you haven’t seen this act… COME SEE US!  The music is lively and fun with incendiary guitar playing and all out drum wars.  “Let’s get together and feel alright” in the summer of ’19.

Dear Students and Families,

Hope everyone had a great Easter!
Everything is blooming and our musicians are too!
What a great month this has been at the SJAA.
Lots & Lots & Lots to celebrate and some important info below too…

Academy Goes to the Mansion!

Ukes & Pianos, Guitars, Voices & Violins.
(and a little hometown history)

Big THANK YOU to all our students, families and friends who made our
“Academy @ the Mansion” a success.

We did not anticipate such a big crowd for the 2nd show (we were a bit oversold so apologies to those of you with limited viewing!).

Lots of activities going on at this time of year (track, competitions, community and family events, etc) so it really meant a lot to us that so many would make MUSIC a priority on a beautiful spring day in St. Joseph.

It was a truly special event and the space is near and dear to our hearts here.

Viva la France!

So everyone is asking about the tour and the trip overseas.

“I missed you guys!” Great to be back on home ground and back to my people.

I was performing in northern France for 12 dates (actually in the plane for 2).

It was a great trip. Top-flight musicians in the Nova Project are also great friends who make me play difficult music (from the heart) while translating, transporting, baby sitting and feeding me (all in French!). So many old friends I haven’t seen in a long time (and made some new ones too). We had great audiences and full houses at every show!

I ate lots of bread, many fine cheeses, wild boar patte, some caviar and some local favorites. I wanted to treat my friends to some proper “American” food so I cooked… Tacos! Kind of hard to find proper salsa there. I had to call home to get the taco seasoning right (and I didn’t. I pretty much burned everyone’s taste buds off. But they were kind anyway).

Apparently, Tacos are a real delicacy in France.

Thanks to my friends and ex-patriots there for making great memories with me.

Anthony Glise, JR and Ken Sugita on the run and on “la rue” in “Vieux L’ille” France

Dear Students & Families,

We had a big Milestone this month. The SJAA celebrated our first year in our commercial location!

Happy B-day, SJAA! We’ll be “toddling” soon. Jan. 8 was our anniversary. Also… Elvis’ Birthday. Coincidence? Yes.

Thank you for being along for the ride and for growing with us! We’ve been working hard and did quite a lot of bootstrapping to make sure we could make rents and keep it warm/cool around here. There has been no scrimping however on the really important things… having great teachers, supporting our staff, students and families and having lots of performance opportunities for our students.

More to come!

Thank you for coming to play at the SJAA and for encouraging the advancing musicians in your life.

Therefore, a regular lesson/class time is arranged for each student. Students can plan their practice schedule around their lesson time and establish effective routines for making progress. For these reasons the following policies have been adopted and updated:

Tuition Private lessons are $102 per month. All payment is due at the FIRST LESSON of each month.

Enrollment – Paying tuition for a month’s lessons reserves a lesson appointment which can be renewed each month with payment.

Schedules –Lessons are generally scheduled for a specific time once per week with four lessons per month. Months containing a 5th week will be used for make-ups or otherwise considered a “Bonus” lesson! Each instructor maintains a unique schedule with a limited number of lesson appointments each week.

Cancellations – 48 hours notice.
Instructors make their livelihood by providing their time and services to students able to dedicate their time and sincere desire to learn a musical instrument.

Though all communication is appreciated, non-emergency cancellations, last minute cancellations and “no shows” necessitate charging the full lesson fee for the unused space reserved for the student. 48 hours notice.
In most cases, missed lessons will be made up in the 5th week. It is sometimes necessary that  the instructor will need to reschedule at the availability of both student and teacher or cancel.

Should the instructor need to cancel, credit for the pre-paid lesson payment will be applied to the following month.

The 365 Day Practice Challenge

The 365 Day Practice Challenge
The Goal here is to make your practice a part of your everyday routine. You will only need to practice the days you sleep or the days you eat! The amount of time is not as important as the act of just being with your instrument for a little while everyday. (Those who dedicate themselves to 20 minutes per day will have over 121 hours of practice invested.) You’ll be a confident and advancing musician!

Thank you for coming to play at the SJAA and for encouraging the advancing musicians in your life.
TeacherZone!

We are offering all SJAA students and families some great new benefits with TeacherZone, an online, music lesson management platform.

The teachers have already been using it to take attendance and for in-house communication.

Students, guardians and teachers can each have their own personalized account for transparent communication for all concerned. Finally, a system to help you keep track of what students are learning.

It’s going to be a great tool that incorporates the technology everyone is already using online, with their tablets and phones. We can encourage students the other six days a week by creating online review lessons, assign practice, easily share musical content and more!

Parents can log in and see exactly what’s going on in lessons and at practice time. TZ will also help with scheduling automated payments and communication.

Our students matter most. And we want to provide all the best possible tools for them to succeed.

You will still be able to call, text or email with your teacher if that is your preferred method of communication.

We’ll start rolling out the benefits and features slowly in the days after Christmas.

You should be receiving an email from TZ shortly (or maybe some of you already have and weren’t sure what it was, it is NOT SPAM) with your usernames and passwords.

The software does a ton of stuff and we are still learning it too. If you have any questions or problems, just let us know and we can put you on the right track.

There is also an APP for students.

It’s very cool and exciting stuff!
2019 Lesson Policy

We’ll have updated lesson policies for everyone in the new year. Just a few basic changes and a reminder for the current policies.

We’ll try to get an email out with them too.

It’s been a great year in the new location and truly grateful for everyone that is growing with us.

We want to eliminate any confusion and keep everyone, students and teachers on the same page.

And this is it!

The SJAA got our retail licenses. While we won’t be a full retail store, we will be able to offer some accessories (strings, tuners, etc) at a discount and be able to handle your book orders or keep a few things in stock!
