The Write Notes – July 2017
Newsletter from the SJAA

Welcome to the “Write Notes”, the monthly newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy!

Family, Friends & MUSIC – One of the great joys of my life is playing music. I consider it a great blessing in the ways that I am allowed to make fun music with fun people. My fellow musicians and band mates are seldom just co-workers. These folks are my friends. We have played 100’s (in some cases 1000’s) of shows together all over the country. We travel, share meals, share laughs and memories AND we share music together.

This month, I’ve been so lucky to play with so many of these great friends and wonderful musicians.

Earlier this month, I was even reunited for a couple of nights of music making with my very best friends from my earliest days of playing. Eddie, Chris, Mike and I had a band before we even had instruments! We learned and practiced together from the very beginning. We grew together, encouraged and befuddled one another. We made memories playing music (lots of it bad but we had to start from the beginning).

I like to joke that we used to get kicked out of rehearsal spaces A LOT. We were noisy, loud, brash, messy and sometimes, ornery. Our families kicked us out and accepted us back. Several places invited us in and then moved us along. I’m so grateful to all the people who gave us space (for a little or a long while) to get this music thing together and work it out.

To meet these guys years later and still be able to play music together is what it is all about. Some of us became professional musicians, some write songs, some just play for fun. These days, we all have families and do all kinds of work. We are cops, preachers, teachers, care-takers, gardeners AND players.

In our lives, music has truly been the tie that binds. No matter how long we are apart or whatever might happen, we always pick up where we left off. Great friends who can pick up there instruments and make more music together.

New Teachers – The SJAA is expanding and our student growth this summer has been one for the record books. We are currently interviewing new teachers for several instruments and will have more slots available for learning. Student of the Month –

Jack H. – We want to congratulate Jack on his recent High School Graduation. As a guitar student with our studio, Jack has participated in recital besides directing and performing with his high school pep band. Besides being a fine musician, he’s also a record breaking athlete, excellent scholar and most importantly, a wonderful person.

We want to wish Jack the very best in his next chapter as a student of engineering at the University of Missouri, Rolla.

As “Student of the Month”, Jack will receive an iTunes gift card from the SJAA!

Congratulations on all your hard work, Jack. We are super proud to have you as a guitar student at SJAA.

Big thanks to Jack and her family for recommending their friends to the St. Joseph Arts Academy.

Daytime Lessons Available –

Having trouble finding time for music lessons in the evening. We have lots of busy professionals, retirees and home school students who prefer to take lessons during the regular business day. “Lunch Hour” lesson times are available with openings almost everyday between 11am and 2pm.

Hour Lessons –

Many of our busy, adult professionals and most dedicated younger students opt for a one hour session. More time and one-on-one coaching with your teacher is a wonderful opportunity to help you reach your musical goals more quickly. If you have the time or interest in an hour session, talk to your teacher and we will work with you to help you get it scheduled.

Guitar in your Home! –

We’ve recently started our “in-home” music program for guitar. Many people prefer or need to take a lesson in their homes due to child care, business or even health restraints. We are here to serve the entire community of music learners. If you are interested in or need music lessons in your own home, drop us note. We’ll make arrangements to come to you!

Celebrating One Year of Guitar Lessons

Jalea B. just celebrated her one year anniversary as a guitarist!

We are so proud of all her accomplishments in such a short amount of time. She’s learning to read music, she’s a master of her chords and scales and has learned many, many songs and pieces. Besides all of her dedicated practice, Jalea has also already performed in recitals last fall and this spring. All of this in just her first year!

Along with her guitar playing, Jalea is an accomplished dancer and a famous lover of the Beatles!

We want to congratulate Jalea on all of her hard work and say “Thank you” to “Granny” Cindy for bringing her to her lessons and for all the encouragement she gives. And they even brought their teacher some cookies! Oatmeal raisin. My favorite!

Thinking About Starting Music Lessons?

So you are thinking about starting music lessons. Music is a wonderful part of being a human being and brings a lot of benefits to our lives. Learning to play yourself or providing lessons for a loved one is one of the greatest gifts you can give or receive.

If you are new to music education or have never played an instrument, you may have some questions. Our booklet should help in answering some of the most common questions or concerns for those just starting out. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to write us. We are happy to provide any information you need in making the best decisions about getting going with your music lessons. jason@stjosephartsacademy.com

The Write Notes – June 2017
Newsletter from the SJAA

Welcome to the “Write Notes”, the monthly newsletter from the St. Joseph Arts Academy!

Summertime is in full swing! We hope you are off to a great summer time with your family and friends. It’s a great time use your extra free time to pick up a new instrument or really buckle down on your musical goals.

We have many brand new students starting this summer. Some of our more dedicated students are even starting new instruments or expanding to hour long sessions to make the most of their vacation.

We recently took a one week summer break so our family could take our annual trip to Gulf Shores, AL. It’s a great time with our friends and extended family. We have lots of fun on the beach, we eat great food and we play a lot of music together and sing everyone’s favorite songs. We call it the “Hootenanny Hotel” and we have a wonderful time being together and music is a big part of it.

My guitar goes everywhere I go. But we also take extra guitars, ukuleles, a keyboard, a bunch of shakers and noise makers and song books along. Always a great trip!

Wishing you a very safe and happy summer as you do your own traveling and fun-time getaways.

News –

Home Runs for Rose – I was very proud to be able to perform with our band, Soca Jukebox recently for the 2nd annual, “Home Runs for Rose”, a charity event to fight childhood cancer. For the most part, it was a warm but beautiful day with families meeting for a charity softball tournament and live music.

We played alongside regional favorites, Outlaw Jim and The Nace Brothers as well as national recording artists, Pure Prairie League.

While we made it through our set, an impending thunderstorm forced us to cover the stage, batten down the hatches and take cover for about an hour. The storm passed and the show went on!

The event was a great success and raised over $15,000 that was awarded to a local family fighting for and alongside their young son.

It’s amazing the good work that a little music (and some softball) can accomplish.

Great Guitars – I’ll be performing alongside to championship winning guitar players this week. The Walnut Valley Guitar Festival and Competition is the super bowl of finger style and flat picking guitar competitions hosted in Winfield, KS. Magoon’s in St. Joseph will be presenting the 2016 1st (Jack Wilson from Chicago) and 2nd place (Dan Bliss from KC) champs this Thursday, June 22 at 7pm. Talk about taking a lesson! I’m going to be front and center and even get to throw a few chords into the ring myself!

Upcoming recitals – The summer concert and festival season is upon us with your instructors doing a lot of family-friendly performances around the area. So watch for those and make plans to get out and hear some music this summer.

The SJAA is very excited about the invitation to present our students at two our regions largest and most popular summer festivals.

Are your kids going to be driving you crazy this summer? Parents want their children in productive and growth oriented activities during those off months.

Summer is an excellent time to start a new instrument, rededicate yourself to a serious practice schedule and set short term musical goals. Students actually have more time to practice during the summer without competing with their regular school work. Summer also adds for flexible scheduling.

The “lazy days” of summer just don’t exist around here. The SJAA is a year round school. Let us help you make the most of your summertime.

How Can I Stick with Learning a New Instrument?

Hey, let’s face facts. Learning a musical instrument is fun and rewarding but it’s also kind of tough.

If it were easy, everyone would play an instrument.

Unfortunately, we know that it’s kind of a rare skill amongst the population at large.

Personally, I think everyone should learn to play something.  And they can!  The key is to understand that simple doesn’t always mean easy.  That anything worth doing requires effort, energy and attention.  To know that you might not always feel like practicing.  You might feel bored or frustrated sometimes.  But you know you are going to do it anyway.

There are certain things we all do.  We like to eat.  We like to sleep.

Hey, we are human and we do those things everyday because we need to.  Well, now we are talking about musicians.  Guess what they do everyday?

Musicians play music and practice it.  That’s just who we are and part of what we do.

Everyday.

The days we sleep and the days we eat.

For beginners, it is often tough to accept that it takes a lot of time and effort to become the accomplished  musician they dream of, but with the following tips, you’ll find it easy to stay dedicated in your music lessons.

Choose your instrument wisely.
When you’re first considering music lessons, follow your natural inclination toward a specific instrument.  Also, it is worth taking a wander around your local music shop.  Not only does this give you the chance to hold the instrument, but you can get demonstrations of every variety until you find something that’s right for you. If you don’t find yourself immediately attached to anything, you can always rent instruments – or try one that everyone has access to… with some singing lessons!

Learn music you like.
It’s all well and good to aspire to play the great classics that every professional has in their repertoire, but when starting off,  it is worth picking some pieces of music that mean something to you.  If you ask your teacher to help you tackle a piece you feel a connection with, you’re far more likely to want to carry on learning and attempting to play.

Learn with others.
Even though many of us opt for private music lessons with the hope of learning faster with more one-on-one time, it can actually be beneficial to learn with a friend or a family member.  This works especially well if you’re trying to encourage a child as young children love to be involved in what their parents are doing.  Group classes are a great way to get started and make some like-minded friends.  Especially important for the socialization of our littlest learners.

Music is NOT rudiments and scales?
Traditional music teachers will often begin by teaching scales, chords and other basics but these can get extremely tiresome after a few lessons.  Find a teacher that will start by teaching you based on YOUR musical goals and it might just keep you interested for when more structured rules and theories need to be learned.

Don’t be afraid to jam.
Even the most rehearsed and experienced musicians need some moments of letting go.  This is something you can easily achieve with a jamming session. Whether you’ve learned just one song or you have a whole repertoire, spontaneity not only encourages creativity, but it might open up your eyes to things you never knew you could play. Finally, jamming might reveal to you what you want to focus on in your lessons, which makes it easier to stay dedicated and work toward your goals.
